Scott Sonnon’s Tips for Travel

We checked in with 5.11 Ambassador and frequent traveler Scott Sonnon, creator of TacFit®, for some tips on keeping important items secure while traveling. Below you’ll find his pocket strategy.

When I travel, I wear 5.11 Stryke TDU pants because I don’t keep any documents or valuables in a bag in the event that I sleep, need to move fast without losing or bouncing contents or to grab exactly what I need quickly without dislodging other gear.

The side pockets have multi compartments which hold my gear secure.

I keep my waterproofed phone in my left pocket in front so I can feel it vibrate since I always mute it, and in the rear compartment my A6-G FliteLite flashlight which also serves as a kubaton.

In my right side pocket, my passport and boarding passes in the front compartment let me easily grab ID without digging. In the rear, I keep my cash, credit cards and license wrapped in a rubber band so I don’t have to take it out in a metal detector.

Hanging loose in the main side pocket, I have a “throw away” wallet with a little cash to make it credible, two expired credit cards, and an old license from a different State. I have thrown them in the past, and ran the other way saving me a fight for less than $20.

Once I hit the ground, I pull my knife from my checked bag. Though having carried “disposable” knives in the past (because who wants to lose hundreds of dollars ditching a favorite blade), honestly, I’d rather lose several hundred and survive than deal with another blade malfunction by being a cheap bastard.

Besides the stretch fit which allows me maximal range and comfort, the 5.11 Stryke TDU pants have one very cool feature, the pocket has a reinforced section for my clip of my folder and a tunnel which allows the bottom of my knife clip to insert under the top fold of my side pocket so I can open the pocket without the clip impeding it.
